Hello from Scunthorpe
davidcurtis021:
hi all
as you can see from my username i am called david i am a mushroom farmer just beggining to ponder retirement in five years time i come here as a collector of manufactured steam toys and my primary aim is to set up a small workshop to enable me to make those spares you can't buy.
I have no knowledge of macine tools other than a pillar drill and a rigid pipe threading machine. Luckily i have a friend from another forum and a member here who has taken me under his wing.
outside of work i am incredibly lazy and if there is a way to cheat i'm all ears.
so here is my first question my starter for ten as they say. thinking about setting tools to cut on the centre line is there a reason why you should not mount a laser pointer in the tailstock and disect the beam with the tool point.

Hi there David  welcome to Madmodder.
About setting the tool height at centre with a laser, thinking about it, it might work, but some of the laser pointers I've come across have a fairly wide beam, ie 1mm or more. Also you would have to make sure that the tailstock was in allignment each time you used that method.
The method I've found to be quick and easy is to gently trap a 6" engineers rule ( or even better a 12" rule ) between the tool and the workpiece. If the rule is exactly vertical then the tool is set on center. It may not be exactly on center, but it is close enough and when taking a facing cut you will be able to finely adjust it to perfectly spot on centre.

Hi David
Welcome to MadModders. I see you have already got an answer to your question. If you have any more, ask away as there is always someone around to answer or at least offer an opinion. There are members here that repair as well build steam toys so you will fit right in. When you get a chance you might post up a few pictures of your collection as :worthless:. Looking forward to your participation in the forums :D :D
Cheers
