Tubing bender for the V-twin engine

George.
This was a very interesting write up and a fine job as usual from you.
When I have had the need to bend thin wall piping etc I have used very fine sand. You being a pattern maker I am sure you have used this method before could you tell me the reasoning for your choice on the low temp alloy you used?
All the best. Anthony.

Hi George,
I know that this obviously works and it's definitely well made but I have just one thought....
You said about the follower shoe being made from steel in case of galling, fair enough. I was wondering though, if you had/hadn't thought of using a roller with a radius cut into it like you did on the main curve on the dividing head? Then would it not roll along the bending pipe, still keeping the form and much less chance of galling?
Just a thought.
As I said, I know this obviously works... and it's only one thought. ('bout my weekly thought limit at the mo!)

Hi Tony, I guess the main reason I used it was because someone else said they had good luck doing it so I figured I'd give it a try. With using the Cerro alloy you only have to plug one end and I would think it would be more rigid than sand and alot less messy.
Ralph, when I made my small bender I did exactly what you are suggesting. Although the tubing bent fairly well when I got to the end of the desired bend there was a slight indentation where the wheel seemed to dig in. In all fairness I didn't have the tubing filled with anything. I thought that with the rectangular shoe it would spread the load out so there wouldn't be that small contact area.

Fair enough George, I was just curious as to why and what path you had taken to the design :)
As said.... Worked. Just thinking in text

George, I meant to ask in my earlier post, but forgot; Where do you get your Cerro alloys? It's in my Brownells catalog, but a bit spendy, ($47 per pound). Other gunsmithing supplies show a similar price.
Also, do you know if Cerrosafe will bend, or is that a job only for Cerrobend?
Besides using them for the purpose you've shown us here, these alloys sound like they would be just the thing for making a cast of internal threads that are hard to gage.
Thank you,
Dean
