It is a rotary valve attached to the crankshaft. It has 2 slots and rides in the block with the outlet/inlet tubes. If that fit is not real close, you loose too much steam for it to run efficiently. ironman |

There are a few crank-valve designs around from David Kerzel - particularly his "Tube Engines". These even include a 5-cylinder radial version. His are all soldered together - I'd not thought of "separating" the parts as in the pic you posted. His ball-valve engines might be of interest too.
