i was just at a place called lee valley, here in toronto and they have a bunch of pen kits and wood pen blanks. i was thinking of getting some and making pens for the family.

Excellent job. There is all of the information you could ever need at this site. http://penturners.org/
I finish sand mine starting at 400 and work up to 12000 in steps and, if wood, spray with lacquer, several thin coats. There are many options for finishing.
The challenge in pen making seems to be the same as metal working, modifying the original kits and blanks to be one offs. Warning!! pen making can be addictive.
