My new (old) Logan and my new mill
« on: January 21, 2010, 06:46:13 PM »
This is for Bernd...here are pics of my new toys I picked up in the last week. My pal Steve here turned me on to the Logan on the local craigs list. I already have a nicely modified 9x20 from him, and a super cool homemade CNC lathe (you seen the link in one of his threads), also from him, and even a 7x10 I've futzed with for a few years. So I wasn't really looking for another lathe. But I went to see it anyway. Next thing you know it's in the back of Steves truck on its way to my garage. I hope to restore it to showroom condition someday. Here is what it looked like when I picked it up;

While I was looking at the lathe, I kept seeing this cool half or 3/4 sized knee mill out of the corner of my eye. Then the guys says...hey, know anyone looking for a mill? so the next day that was in my garage too...LOL. Its a pretty nice unit. It is from Select Machine Tool & Supply Co (anyone ever heard of them? are they still around? I cant find anything). Aged meehanite castings, hand scraped ways, one shot oiling system, and has a DRO on it too.

Rubes,

Thanks for the pics. Didn't realize a 200 was that old looking. Looks in pretty good shape.

I really like that mill. Looks very clean. Never heard  of Select Machine Tool & Supply Co. Could have been built by somebody else and sold by the Select Machine Tool company.

Thanks again for the pics.

It is a 1943 model according to the serial number. Funny thing is I can still buy new parts for it from the factory (right here in Illinois). There is a lathe list on Yahoo that Scott Logan himself answers any question on these old things. I think this is going to be a beauty if I ever get it all restored. I love to see old machinery restored to like new condition.

Scott Logan is also on Russ Keplers "model engineering" news list. Have talked to him several times about my Logan. It was built in 1971, so mines a bit more modern. Great little lathe lathe.

Congratulations on some fine new machines! The mill looks very nice and clean, good size too!

On a further note, I'm amazed that none yet have noticed the chuck key left in the chuck. What's going on with shop safety these days?

That's because the power cord isn't plugged in. Didn't you notice that?  :wack:

Those were the pics from before I got the lathe. I too was wondering when that would come up. On another forum I was getting grief for not having a cap on my gas can in the mill picture. In reality I normally do, but lost it in the snow filling up the blowsnower a few weeks ago.

Rbues.

I too last year just purchased this model Logan. Here is the link.

http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=2420.0

You will find it’s a nice machine, I am very impressed with the length of cross feed travel for its size. So many nice things to say about my unit but I will tell you the negatives I have found.

The motor drive and belt unit is connected straight on the headstock being shielded by two little nylon washers, this was giving me vibration troubles. The motor sits right on my table so that was giving me hell too so I had to copy the manufactures idea of a self supporting leg that goes straight to ground, looks like you have the original table mount with the leg. Let me know if it give you trouble with vibration. I still have not yet cured my problem.

Nice purchase.      All the best.  Anthony.
If you cant fix it, get another hobby.

You stole that one for that money Anthony!! And with all those accessories too, good score for you pal. I did get an almost full set of change gears, but nothing else.

So here is the start of the restoration. I'm taking a few liberties with blinging it up a little. Aint gonna cut any smoother or better, but it aint gonna make it any worse either. Her eis the tailstock all finished and hardware replated.

Hallo.
Your mill seems to be one Chinese 6x26 clone of the Clausing 8520.

If You like to know more about that mill,I can suggest the Yahoo Group:

Mine is a German sold version, called Knuth FF 20

Thre links work fine, one takes you to an age restricted warning but if you click it it just goes to the milling group and nowhere seedy
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Darren,

Just checked out that second site that Ralph posted. It's restricted to people over 18 because they don't want kids under 18 on there list. It's NOT PORNOGRAPHIC

Thanks Bernd, I assumed that's would be the reason, young kids can soon destroy a group or forum if let in ...

Bit like our towns, villages and streets really ...  :bang:

On the contrary

I would say looking at a sleek, full figured, brand new, well designed well oiled and honed milling machine is close to pornography.

I know off topic.      Sorry.

Well then, I guess I'll go take a look. I just know sneaks sometimes hide that crap in legitimate looking posts or links. Sorry Ralph, no offense meant to you ya know!! I try to be very careful with where I go, so it just kind of freaked me out when a tool site was warning me of adult content  :whip:...LOL
