Soft MT2 blank

(1/2) > >>

Gerhard Olivier:
I got an MT2 blank arbour for ARC at the midlands show to use to make a revolving chuck.

But it wont drill or bore???? to hard -Is there a way to soften it?

Gerhard

John Rudd:
It may be case hardened........

Dunno....Heat it and let it kewl naturally....

sbwhart:
I've machined up quite a few blank morse tapers, her's a couple of links, they are quite tough stuff but you can machine them, have you tried a TC or tipped tool.

Gerhard Olivier:
Thanks for tips
Tried a tc tip - cut but not enjoyed it .
Here is the rest of the project.

Started with a steel bar threaded the end M12 by 1mm to fit the chuck.

Fitted the chuck to the thread.

Then made an arbour cut concentric

Backed the chuck onto the concentric arbour and then machined the spindle to bearing size- drilled and tappen the end for a bearing retention bolt.

I have replaced the bolt with a cheese head as it is smalled since doing the pic.

Now I have got the bore in the mt2 to size but was going to hold the lot together with grub skrews - but this lot wont drill never mind tapping.  WOULD Locktite be ok around the bearing outers to hold the lot together???

Gerhard

Gerhard Olivier:
The mt2 blank bored (the finish is not very good)  but as Stew suggested it cut with the TC tip.

Then it was impossible to drill so I made a small oven with 5 fire bricks and heat it up to soft oranje and left it in the oven to cool over as long as possible. Thanks John Rudd . Then drilled and tapped.

After polishing with wet and dry I assembled it

The End

Gerhard
