cutting gears
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:31:58 PM »
i had to cut 2 gears for a project im working on so i followed reg ingolds advise on his website   http://www.oldengine.org/members/randmingold/models/gearcutting/
so i made and indexer from some bits of junk i had around

i then loaded the gear blank and the gear used for indexing and cut the gear. the indexing gear is the brass one on the left and the finished gear is on the right.

it worked very well and was very quick to do (35 minutes cutting time) i used a flycutter with the cutting bit sharpened to the from of the gear tooth.

heres the finished pare of gears

if you read regs site about the gear cutting it will make more sense that my babbling ::)

Good bit of improvisation with the indexer and a real neat bit of gear cutting.

Chuck,

Nice job. Gears look good. What are they going in? Inquiring minds want to know.  :D

thanks for the kind comments  :nrocks:

it was a big learning experience for me but it was allot of fun.
i couldn't leave the bigger gear alone.............i just had to cut spokes in it  :dremel:

the gears started out being just a pair of gears to see if i could make them.............but now i will have to use them for a model gas engine.
they are a 2 to 1 ratio which is just what you need for a gas engine!!!
