Thanks John,  I will be off soon to talk to the bearing man to see what he has in stock.

Hi John

I used free machining mild steel for my spindle, Silver steel will be just fine but as John said its not easy stuff to get a good finish.

Silver steel is heat treatable and usualy costs quite a bit more than mild steel.

Have fun

It is complete!

I have two spindles, the high speed one for internal grinding takes 1/4" mounted stones and the much slower one carries a much bigger stone for external grinding.

It seemed to work quite well on the only project I have given it so far which was to trim the heads of my cold chisels. :med:  Hardly a job requiring great precision but it did it admirably!

well done John, looks great,

But where are the pictures of the precision grinding of the cold chisels?

Nice neat looking job John,  as a first job I gave my centre punches a clean up so I recon your chisels are a good tester.

A couple of cold chisels, just a little bit of mushrooming, not much but this could be a test for the tool post grinder:-

Chisel in the chuck and the grinder making a nice spray of forked yellow sparks:-

Four chisels,  each with a nice tidy top:-

How cool is that eh?  Precision ground cold chisels!

Those are the best dressed cold chisel heads that I have seen in a long time. :) :)
