Putting right my tailstock DRO.
bogstandard:
A very black time in the shop today, finishing off the cover for the read head.
The reason being I was using this dense black perspex I was given, it seems to absorb all the light and you just can't get good detail in the pics.
The fist job was to get everything glued together.
This was a major H&S issue, the chemical liquid I was using required the whole lot, mask, rubber gloves and glasses and applied by the drop thru a syringe.
But it does have the advantage that it is a fully bonded joint within 10 minutes and so it could be stuck back onto the mill for a bit more work. I have tried all sorts to get a good bond on perspex, and this one does it.
Up onto the mill to have the top faces evened up and a radius put onto the top corners.
A bit of polishing and a few holes drilled, and it was ready.
No clearance issues anywhere, and it seems it could stand a tank running over it.
It will even hold a few small drills or whatnots on the top.
Job done and dusted.
One more round tuit job out of the way.

BTW, I was asked about the finish on the part I did in the last post, the nose clamp.
The question was, did I use anything to clean it up?
All I did was scrape the burrs off the edges and smoothed off a chatter mark in the internal rounded corner.
This is how the finish comes off the machine.
There is no secret to getting a good finish, it is to do with razor sharp tools, slow feeds and high speeds, and of course experience, which you learn along the way.

A very well documented piece there Bog's.
Easy to understand and follow.
Bravo.

That is a very good mod, I especially like the rounded grooves for resting drills in while you work, that shows a lot of thought has gone into this, making it not only functional, but extra useful as well.
Have a couple of nana's :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:

Many thanks gents for the comments.
With regards to the drill holder. I actually bought a few trays that do this and was going to use one for the top of the guard, but it just didn't look right, so a couple of visitors will be going home clutching plastic tool rests.
There was a major issue for me with this mod.
As you most probably know, I am a lubrication fanatic.
This mod actually covers over the front lubrication point for the tailstock ram, but I have accepted the fact that I will have to lubricate it by dropping a bit of oil onto the ram while it is extended and then wind it back in.
This post will hardly appeal to anyone, but it does show how to look at a problem and solve it as you go along.

Great that Bogs, really good write up and modification.
You're right, drilling holes to accurate depth with out this is a bit like a stab in the dark.
On lubrication - my harrison has grease nipples everywhere ... I assume these are actually for grease and not oil? It says it comes with a grease gun in the brochure I still have and it looks the same as the one I've got.
