Never seen an oval dog before, sure you don't mean epileptic?
But getting back to the point.
I received off British Gas (free of charge) one of those radio monitors that tells you how much overall power you are using, and you can then turn on/off appliances just to see how much they are really costing you. It is very eye opening.
Very similar to this

I have done a study on my workshop, and for medium usage, say four or five hours a day, every day, my shop uses between 20 and 25 squid per month. I cannot be more exact as some machines use more power than others, but this is what I came up with, erring towards the low side.
To me, a fiver a week is nothing compared to other forms of entertainment, a couple of pints of beer, a pizza, or quadruple it and it gives you a night out at a cheap restaurant for one.
But I am a little frugal in my shop, I will turn off one major machine completely before doing something on another major machine (lathe, mill, grinder, buffing machine, power hacksaw etc), even if it means turning it back on again in a few minutes. If I return to the house, I will throw all the main ring trips in the workshop, and turn them back on when I return. Every little helps to keep the costs down.

Your and my rotaries will never be running loaded, so never actually delivering rated HP. So cost of running is pretty minimal. My shop, during the colder months, cost about $50/mo. and that included the radiant heating startup.
Darren:
Quite right, and I'd imagine quite a few of our machines would never need to produce the motors rated horse power either.
3hp, mill.....there must be a reason...but what for...?
