However if it is threaded I would expect to see some flats or something so it could be gripped for unthreading... :coffee:

Shrink-fit?  Some high end tools use that method, though this doesn't really look like one.

These are one piece production machine tools. I you break one, the whole thing goes to scrap.  ::)

Thanks for clearing up that mystery, the chaps selling them off could have picked them up from a scrap pile, you'd have to be carful buying one.
