Mini mill belt drive conversion

(1/2) > >>

John Rudd:
Ok,

I'll try this again...seems my original post hasbeen lost in cyberspace...

Right, my original plan was to change out those horrible plastic gears in my Chester mill after breaking the teeth whilst fly cutting ( how ham fisted of me..)

So I looked for information in the worlds greatest info repository.

I placed a pdf file of the conversion, done by Jerry Rollet of the Yahoo Mini mill group,in the downloads section for reference.

There's more.....

John Rudd:
Now as I said, my mill came from Chester UK and is similar to many of the other Chinese imports as sold by Grizzly and Harbor Freight in the US..depicted in the lower picture

However Chester changed their design slightly over the years and the mill I have is like the Warco one...the first picture..
With mine being slightly different, I had to modify the dimensions somewhat...These changes were mainly to motor spindle pulley id and the bore of the main spindle pulley..Nothing likely to cause nightmares..

John Rudd:
Ok,

Stripping the machine to fit the belt drive is fairly straight forward...

I 'borrowed' some picture showing the strip down of a typical mill as I didnt take any of my own...
This first shot shows the spindle lock nut that needs to be removed...

Next, remove the input shaft gear followed by the metal spacer that doubles as the spindle lock...leaving things looking like the third photo...

At this stage, you need to commence installing your freshly made parts, assuming you made them from the JR pdf file. Everything should go together fairly easily, following his instructions...

Now if you want to change the bearings prior to fitting your belt drive then pay attention...

More to follow.....

So I looked for information in the worlds greatest info repository..and found this:

The pdf is too big to post up as an attachment( unless management can permit this)
So refer to the file for details of the basic conversion....

Hi John,

When I click the link I get a "Document Not Found" message :(

Help!

John Rudd:
OK in the meantime, I've been busy making bits....

A picture of my mill before the conversion, and some shots of the parts needed.

I followed the text and drawings from Jerry, but as I said earlier becasue my mill isnt the same as the 'mini mill' I had to make some slight changes to some of the dimensions...
