Greensand Casting in the Rain

<< < (2/2)

shipto:
Very nice I keep meaning to get another casting furnace built but never seem to have the time for it. Even have about 5 boxes of motor feet at work ready to melt. I have been watching some youtube videos of a guy that does cast iron in a microwave which looks interesting.

tom osselton:
I use the mason sand for everything but I do vent it with some Tig wire to fight the permeability problems.

vtsteam:
Dwayne, I can't imagine melting iron in a microwave oven, unless you were making something truly tiny. But go for it!

Tom, the sand I got was labeled as Quikrete "Fine" -- I'd call it super fine. Really it seemed to be half dust. Just pouring it carefully out of the bag causes a bad cloud. I've noticed that bagged sand even under brand names, like Quikrete, vary a lot in different parts of the country -- probably because transportation costs make decentralization of sources necessary. Somebody else reported Quikrete Fine sand as 40 mesh. No way, mine is! But they're a couple thousand miles away from me, so it's different sand.
