The Breakroom > The Water Cooler
visiting Canada August 2024
(1/1)
John Rudd:
So I'm venturing out across the pond....
Are there any good tooling stores to visit?
My journey takes from Toronto to as far east as Quebec city...
ninefinger:
Passing through Ottawa maybe on your way east? Or a nice country road detour.
Theres a small tool shop just West of Ottawa near Perth, called Cardon Tools
https://cardontools.ca/
" In store shopping is available Wednesday to Saturday 9-5pm and Sunday 11-5."

I'd go more often but its over an hours drive for me to go there and there's not much else around it, so I'd be forced to buy stuff to justify the drive!

KBC Tools have a branch in Toronto https://www.kbctools.ca/company/our-locations
Tools aren't the obvious thing to buy when in Canada. Carriage into the country takes ages and costs a bomb, while the customs and carriers help themselves freely to passing goods. That is reflected in prices there, even if you buy from an importer rather import yourself.
I used KBC myself a few times when I lived in Vancouver but TBH, most/much of their stuff was Chinese / Indian / mid-range US stuff and not particularly well priced at that. If you must buy stuff over there, Busybee may be another option - they seem to be a Canadian sister to Grizzly in the US. https://www.busybeetools.com/categories/Metalworking/ They have a few branches near and east of Toronto.
To my mind, they are both in a similar boat to RDG Tools, Chronos and Machine Mart over here. My preference in the UK is the likes of Cutwel, APT Tools etc, ie better quality, often at similar prices, particularly if you can hold off until there is an offer on what you want. I tried to order from Cutwel when I was over there but their franchises wouldn't allow them to supply to customers outside of their UK / Ireland sales area.
