Carbide insert for ME threads
« on: May 11, 2023, 03:26:45 PM »
Hello.
Can anyone recommend the correct 55°carbide insert to cut a 1/4 x 40 tpi ME thread?
To be clear, I am not looking for tap and die, I would like to cut the threads on my Myford.
Unfortunately I am to stupid to grind a hss tool myself.
Thank you for any help.

Hi,

I don't think you'll get a specific 40tpi insert that will cut a full profile and you'd have to go for a 55 degree partial profile insert:

https://www.shop-apt.co.uk/partial-profile-external-threading-inserts/16er-ag55-t350-external-threading-insert-for-general-use.html

These have a range of 8 - 48 tpi.

I hope you're not hoping to find insert to cut the internal thread!

I don't think you'll get a specific 40tpi insert that will cut a full profile

The insert designation would be 16ER 40W or 3ER 40W and there are at least two UK suppliers:

https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/cutting-tools/threading-inserts/16er-40-w-insert-grade-ic-508/p/ISC1215370G

(Zoro are likely to have an identical insert at a cheaper price)

https://www.ewequipment.co.uk/products/16er-40w-ptx-whitworth-55-external-right-hand-threading-insert-posithread

The catalogue of a typical insert manufacturer, e.g. Posithread, will give a reliable guide to availability:

DJC - Happy to be proved wrong.

Cromwell don't have them in stock and the EWEquipment insert isn't cheap.
