Dell,

That looks like a Speed 10 and it looks immaculate. However it doesn't look to have 2,000 rpm on the speed plate.

[I just found this on lathes.co.uk:  Later machines, produced from January 18th, 1978, (from machine V137261) were fitted with grease-lubricated roller-bearing headstocks that, although provided by the factory with the same speed range as the earlier machine, can easily and safely be modified to run as fast as the later "Speed 10" version (see below for details).]

Have fun with it.

That looks really nice and with fine accessories! I've been watching some Myfordboy videos lately on YouTube, and he certainly gets the most out of his ML 10. He's even built a shop-made headstock extension. I imagine you're pretty happy with that acquisition!
I love it when a Plan B comes together!

Hi Phil
Yes serial number V162443 and it has grease lubricated roller bearings and it can be converted to speed 10 , I think it’s exactly the same lathe apart from pulley’s, I looked up Pratt Bernard grip true chuck because I hadn’t heard of it Rotagrip are selling the 100mm for £719.80 that’s 3/4 of the price I paid for the lot very happy

My mate has an ML10 but the earlier version. I gave him a vfd and 3-phase motor for it which allows him to run the lathe a little faster - but not the 2,000rpm yours should be capable of.

When I was at College in Manchester in the early 70s there was a showroom for Joseph Gleave & Son on Piccadilly Station Approach. They had an ML10 on display and I was tempted but couldn't afford the £150!

Lathe levelled and bolted down today made an aluminium rear chip guard, don’t want to use it until I have some grease to grease headstock.
Purchased this collet chuck made by Myford but to take ER 25 collets, just need to get a semi decent set of collets, I know there are literally 100’s out there but for what I do ( clocks ) I can’t justify spending 100’s£ but I don’t want Chinese ones so if anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated, I know it’s possible to get Myford collets but they are one size collets whereas ER will hold in between size stock albeit not quite so accurately.

Most of them are probably made in China anyway but at least if you from a reputable supplier you won't end up with junk. Standard precision is generally around 10um runout and high precision is 5um or so. On Aliexpress you are talking pot luck.

Cutwel is a reputable supplier. If you aren't in a rush, you may find the collet sets on offer from time to time. Otherwise their prices don't seem bad.
https://www.cutwel.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=er25+collet+set

APT in Glasgow are also reasonable for quality and price.

One Myford collet can cost you the same as a set of ER25. I'm lucky to have most of the imperial and metric sizes of Myford collet from when they were a reasonable price. I wish they'd get some made (to a reasonable standard) in India or China.

I just sent back a set of ER20 collets which were supposed to be max 0.008mm runout. Out of the set of 13 only one met the spec with the worst having a runout of 0.14mm. Three of the collets wouldn't take an item of the nominal size and one wouldn't enter the collet nut! I'd steer clear of any supplied in individual yellow containers - I suspect they all come from the same factory who don't give a monkey's about quality.

I'm tempted by a set from APT. Some suppliers don't even bother quoting a runout.

Thanks for replies
The set from apt quoting 0.005mm run out are half the price of cutwell quoting the same  maximum runout if they are the same quality then there is question where to get them from.
Dell
Have ordered from apt.

Dell,

Have you measured the runout of your collet chuck? It may have a lot more runout than the collets? (But hopefully not!)

It couldn't be made without re-chucking. Ideally it would have had the Myford register and thread machined and then fitted to a master Myford nosed machine to machine the taper and ER nut thread.

Hi Phil
I haven’t got the chuck yet but I know someone who has and he said that it is brilliant, if it was made by Myford it should be made to a good standard, (hopefully).

Depends what era. Myford changed hands a few years back, and I think RDG own them now.

Well getting closer to using the lathe collet holder turned up today, fitted to spindle nicely haven’t checked runout yet, ordered PeWe tools Multifix because the QCTP that is on there is next to useless, greased headstock oiled everything else as I don’t know how long it’s been stood or when it was done last ( better to be safe ).

Checked runout on the ER collet with my verdict 0.0005” and it didn’t quite reach the first increment so I presume that’s a bit less than 1/2 thou.
A nice chap Phil sent me a message saying have I seen the ML10 steadies , I hadn’t but I have now as I have purchased them, fixed & travelling for £110 , can’t normally get the travelling steady for that, ( THANKS PHIL ) , tangential tool holders finally arrived from Australia today, ordered Multifix from PeWe tools in Germany so getting there, restored a couple of clocks while I have been waiting for bits to arrive.
My wife asked if she could start spending some money, I said there’s none left

I bought my Multifix starter set from the Create Tool factory in China and subsequently bought additional holders through Alibaba - the additional AD size holders for my Bantam were $30 + vat each. It's true you can buy some awful tat from China but these were both good experiences and their parts are nicely made and fit together well. Although PeWe likes to make out there is some German secret sauce involved, he simply resells stuff he gets from China.

The reason I purchased QCTP from PeWe was because that’s what I had on the Pultra.
As I wanted some way to stop the lathe in an emergency ( heaven forbid) I needed an emergency cut off switch but I thought it was silly spending money on that then upgrading to variable speed later so I decided to upgrade now and be done with it as it’s got the said emergency stop button, so I have ordered the Newton Tesla motor and inverter kit because it’s just plug and play, also found a swivel milling slide for a sensible price as new, so getting there slowly but still waiting for motor kit to turn up.
I have been restoring a clock that was sent to me for restoration and I thought I would add a picture of the state it was in, I think it’s probably the worst one I have done , I have had them come with rusty arbors and filthy but this one takes top prize ( so far )
Before and after pictures.

Hi Phil
They can all be saved, cost usually more than value but you can’t put a value on sentimental items, you just have to look at some of the items people hang onto that they get in the repair shop.
I had to soak this movements arbors in Evaporust for 24 hours .

Dell,

It had been his Dad's who I suspect kept oiling it with ThreeInOne. A full strip down, a good soak in Horolene, a good brushing and then another soak had it looking a lot better - and eventually working!

I keep quiet about an interest in clocks because most inherit an old clock that hasn't worked for years and want it working again (for nothing!). Even if you charged the minimum wage not many would be prepared to pay. As you say the cost can be much more than the value.

Hi Phil
I get clocks sent to me from all over the country because the clocks I do most clock makers won’t touch, I even get then sent from clockmakers to me , I specialise in torsion clocks , although I am retired it gives me something to do and I enjoy doing them and helps the pension of course.

Hi Phil
I have restored a few of the Kaiser universe, I have one myself, the paint very often starts to peel it had on my one so repainted it when I restored it, I also have the  Kaiser world or as some call it a Kaiser grand universe, if you want to repaint it the colour match I found was Hyster-Yale bright parchment ( what they paint Hyster fork lift trucks in ).
