May she rest in peace after a very long and fruitful 96 years of service to the Nation and Commonwealth.

We have had a Union Jack flying by the main road since her Platinum Jubilee. With great sadness and a tear in my eye I have just been out and lowered it to half mast.

While I was at school and in the CCF I had the honour of serving as a member of the armed bodyguard when her Mother came for a state visit - another great and greatly respected lady who showed huge courage during the war.

To all my friends over in the UK...

My condolences. I am saddened to learn of the Queens passing. May she rest in peace.

Eric

In 1954, as a 13yr old I along with hundreds of other school kids lined up on the local Bendigo Victoria footy oval for the visit of the young Queen.

Ours was a regimented school so we got the command to stand at attention as the Royal Couple went past. An "About Face" command was given as the open vehicle reached the end of the row so we stood facing them as they were driven back along the row behind us. (Should I brag that the other kids were jumping and cheering?)

So that's part of my memories of this remarkable lady. OH, and she renamed the oval the "Queen Elizabeth Oval" PLUS gave us a day off school. (I think is was called, "Sandhurst Oval till then".
