Reversing is definitely desirable on a mill drill, I find.

Some of the homemade insert fly cutters I made have to run in reverse because the surplus inserts I got are handed that way. If you ever get a boring head that doesn't have a screw on adapter, you need reverse to run the boring bars in the horizontal position, unless you can find properly handed bars. There are probably other reasons reverse is handy on those mills, but I can't think of them off the bat.
