I saw a similar machine at a trade show  , it was laser sintering a powered stainless steel into some sort of boss feature then machining to finish. Very neat.

Apparently, there are huge savings to be made from 3d printing  hard to cut materials, like Ti , as it saves machining time .

The type you saw has the advantage that the bed of unfused metal powder acts as a support which means you can generate internal features

Whichever type - I can only dream!
