The Kingstone Model Works Shop
« on: March 20, 2022, 12:23:27 PM »
After almost 23 years in the house I'm into a basement redo. I've collected a lot of equipment but it was scattered all over in an ever increasing junk yard in the basement. I figure it was time to separate the machine/wood working shop into it's own room in the basement. With nearly 2,000 sq. ft. of basement I needed a room just for the machinery. I'm still working on finishing the house that was built in 1997. I did the majority of work. It was ruffed in and I'm doing the finishing work. Anyway, here's some pictures of the REDO.

The picture is a bit fuzzy do to hand holding the camera. It's a Buffalo Forge No. 11 drill press that I added a tread mill motor to. Since I wasn't doing any large heavy drilling anymore, used to do motor mount plates for some guys that built drag cars, I decided it was time for it to go. It went to the wife's nephew that builds trucks for truck pulls. This was the first heavy machine that went into the basement to test to see if the stairs I had built would hold the weight.

Next the Logan lathe and the drill press needed to be moved.

The first 2 X 4 and wall sheathing are ready to be installed. I used 1/8 Luan flooring for the walls.

The basement looked like a junk yard in the mean time.

You can see I started the wall way over to the left in this picture.

In the mean time the ball screw lead screws showed up. That'll be in another post in the tool section.

Time for some insulation. Here in NY we are required to insulate the basement at least to below the frost line. But I went all the way from top to bottom.

Next I moved the lathe back over in the area so I could install the wall behind it.

More wall going up.

Also installed 6 led lights. Lights came in set of 10 from Amazon.

The other side of one part of the basement. The Bridgeport is in there. See if you can find it.

This is the corner where the Bridgeport will go.

Junk cleared out of the way in preparation to move the mill.

Had to swing the head around 180° so I could move it.

Had to swing the mill around to point it in the right direction. Luckly that beer belly helps when you need to lift one end of a heavy mill.

Next was to get a 3/4" pipe under the mill.

And then you roll it into place.

And then it's beer time.  :D

Time for more clean up to get at the other wall.

View from the opposite side of the basement.

A view from where the machines are to where my model railroad is taking shape. That will be moved also one of these days.

Time to add more 2 X 4's.

So everything got shoved toward the mill so I could put up the wall.

And a coat of light gray does wonders for lighting.

All the machines are in the area that is going to get closed off from the rest of the basement. The studs are all in place ready for the Luan.

All the wood working machines are on one side.

And the metal working machines are on the other side.

So that was it for moving the heavy machinery to it's permanent location. That leaves the rest of the basement for the model railroad layout. I'll post more pictures of the basement redo as they get worked on. This is one of those projects that takes a bit of time.

What a great shop that is/will be!

I definitely envy you. Your basement has more square footage than my house!

Great to see the pics, and keep them coming, for inspiration..

That'll be a proper workshop! Very nice!

Once you are done with the workshop reno, could you post a few pics of the model railroad stuff too... Is that O or S scale or maybe On30 as they look like they could be narrow gauge equipment?

Thanks. I designed the house in Autocad way back in 1990's. The architect used the drawings for proper prints for the town to Ok the plans. I started with 1800 sq. ft. design and would up with a 2100 sq. ft. house. It's a ranch style house. When you look down from up high it looks like a large "T". I actually designed the house for a model railroad. The basement has a direct access straight down the stairs from the garage. No corners to turn to get any length or wood or other material in.

I'll post as I make progress.

Thanks.

Of course I'll post some pictures. You can also surf over to my web site to see more of my modeling. LINK: https://kingstonemodelworks.com/

I model in HO standard gauge, three foot gauge and thirty inch gauge ( HO, HOn3 & HOn30 )

Here a couple of HOn30 gauge engines I built to a tribute to a modeler on the railroad forum I'm on that passed away.

And the painted models.

A few electric engines in HOn30.

I'll post more as I progress with the basement redo.

Really nice work, Bernd.

As a request, also, would you scale photos for display here to no more than 800 pixels wide. That fits the forum column width. Thanks!

Thanks vtsteam.

Sorry about the size. Didn't realize you used a small format.

Thank Eric. Ya, I got tired of tripping over 20 year old stuff I kept tipping over. It's time to get a bit organized. I want to get the basement cleared out for my model railroad. Plus I want to get the machines all in one place along with the raw stock. It's a slow process but it's getting done. Still have a few projects for the house to finish up also. I'll keep everybody update as I go.
