DIY sheet metal bender?

(1/2) > >>

Mike K:
I'm thinking about making a sheet metal bender.  I know that the upper leaf of the bender ideally has a sharp edge to be able to make sharp bends... Is there any advantage, or disadvantage, to having sharp corners on the bottom, angle iron, pieces of the base?

John Rudd:

I wouldn’t I would think it would just take away some strength used for the folding lever.

Mike K:
My thinking was that a sharp corner on the bottom bending leaf would give more support and help produce a sharper bend?

RussellT:
Hi Mike

I think the crucial thing for the bottom section is that the pivot axis is exactly on the line where the fixed and moving bottom section join.  You can adjust the tightness of the bend by moving the upper clamping part nearer or further from that axis.
