Building a box tool

(1/2) > >>

shipto:
I had intended to post about this the other day but got sidetracked by other stuff.

I need to make some long (about 50mm) bolts for die heads they have a 1/4" head with 0.137" shank.

So to start with I butchered a tool I was given with the lathe thats so odd I cannot foresee a use for it, whats the betting that bites me on the rear end at some point
pictured here with the hss bit that will do the work of shaving the 1/4" down to .137" once it has been ground properly.

I had some 60 X 12 plate that I decided to use so drilled and tapped to join the two bit together, need to get some cap head or countersunk screw so it doesn't stick out from the tool holder so far only need enough clearance to get the die head in once the diameter has been turned down, I might even have the cross slide at an angle to allow this tool to be closer to holder.

So a bit of work later I have whats in the second picture, The smaller hole will house the brass buttons with holes to suit the stock being used and the larger will house the parting off bits.

Finally for now I have made the rotating pivot and holder for the parting tool, I need to make sure that the parting blade will be secure enough to do what it needs to do.

As you can see in the third pick I would have a real job holding anything smaller in my 4 jaw chuck  :D

shipto:
I milled the slot for the parting tool a touch too deep  if I lock it up as it is it will lock tight and not allow me to move it so its going to have to be shimmed up a bit.
However I am quite pleased with it so far the handle will be bolted on the high flats and the locking screws will be part of the handle.

shipto:
The cutting part seems to be working ok its a bit rough because the stock was 6mm rather than 1/4" but hopefully when I use the proper sized stock it will look better.

Now just need to sort the handle out for the parting off bit.
