Ernst Hartepruffer Hardness Tester

You puzzle me Jerry

This is not, I don't think, a lab instrument - it's a practical 'on the job' estimator. I do have a Vickers diamond tester but it's a bit of a faff to set up.

There has been no heating or cooling of the parts, probes or anything. They've all been in the same thermostat controlled workshop at about 19 deg C for several months - obviously there will be minor daily variations.

Were you under the impression I was trying to measure the results of heat treatment - if so this is not the case.

Anyway, the results I've measured have been reasonably consistent, and tie in closely with the steel suppliers specification. I just wanted to check the hardness of the EN19T billet to confirm my milling feeds and speeds before destroying cutters
