I did like your PCB holding jig - is that home-made or something one can buy? I'm finding it a tad awkward holding boards in a regular bench vice, so something like that would be really handy...
I've also had some decent results using a plain old toaster oven to do surface mounted soldering; you don't get the proper reflow temperatures, it's true, but so long as you're careful when removing the heat, and don't jog the board while the solder's still molten, it works well.
