Steampunk Brushless Motor Build

Evening All

I've finally finished my latest project, and I’ll admit this one is a little strange.  It’s a steampunk brushless motor!

Very nice! I think you covered pretty much all of the major workshop food groups with that one

I did like your PCB holding jig - is that home-made or something one can buy? I'm finding it a tad awkward holding boards in a regular bench vice, so something like that would be really handy...

I've also had some decent results using a plain old toaster oven to do surface mounted soldering; you don't get the proper reflow temperatures, it's true, but so long as you're careful when removing the heat, and don't jog the board while the solder's still molten, it works well.
Cheers!

re: the PCB holder.

It was something I bought. If you go to somewhere like Amazon or Ebay  and search for "Circuit Board Holder" there are plenty of them about.

P.S. Thanks Matthew

Thanks David.

Brilliant project and super video.

Which Digital Microscope are you using? It looks excellent.

Cheers.

PhilF - it's an Andonstar adsm302. I think there are a couple of variants, one of which has a longer working distance. It's worth getting this one as is it gives plenty of room for the hot air gun.

Sub'd.

The way you lay down a worm of solder paste across all the pads of the SMD µC and then solder it with the hot air gun, with the solder paste wicking back to the pads is cool. Don't you sometimes get shorts like that?

In my limited experience, the solder will bead up nicely onto SMD parts, it's only if you've gone a bit heavy handed on the solder paste that you get shorts. In fact, if you look at 9:26 on the video, you'll see there is  short between the 4th/5th pins from the right, which David fixes with a bit more of a blast from the heat gun. Having seen one in action now, I'm thinking that's going to be one of my next electronics purchases... that, or a better toaster oven to reflow in!
Cheers!

Wow.

Not very often I watch videos through to the end...

Nicely done.
