chain available in the UK
« on: November 01, 2019, 10:54:01 AM »
I am, in the USA . Friend of mine in the UK is building a small Rudys model steam tractor from plans. He emailed me saying that the chain he needs for steerage is not available in good quality in the UK... Wants me to find a source over here that will ship to England... Now I would be happy to buy the chain here and ship it to him myself but I wondered if there is a good source in his home country ? He is calling it plain 1/8 inch chain but I don't know what that is.. Can I get some answers here?

Maybe an email to Rudy, asking where he sourced his?

Or maybe something like Meccano chain?

Thank you men I will research all suggested sources.

The friend of mine is one of about 3 surviving members of a Yahoo group I began years ago. It was an invitation only private group for elite machinists and if you didn't post for a month or so I'd ban them . Kept the group down to fewer than a dozen members but it was fun because we'd have as many as 60 posts in a single day..  But the brightest guy on the forum - not me - died and the group died with him. So this gentleman and another also from the UK mean a lot to me. I am hoping to help him out.

Steering chain is different from transmission chain.

This type of chain is needed,   http://bit.ly/2Wz8u41

Ebay is a good place to search.

Well poke me in the eye and tell me I am stupid. I called two local post offices to ask if they'd ship to the UK and got no answer..... Frick, and I tried Timbys link and got nothing.. I want to put this issue to bed but no luck.

Try this direct link to  Ebay UK.    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LIGHT-HEAVY-DUTY-ZINC-BZP-WELDED-SECURITY-CHAIN-LINKS-HANGING-FENCE-GATE/192190458614?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40733%26meid%3D3f88437eca5b47c5bf51be43270b0289%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D254321227686%26itm%3D192190458614%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

I expect the builder is not impressed by the flash on the link joints on the most readily available chain.
If the model being built is a traction engine the place to ask is the Tractiontalk forum. All TE builders should be members of that forum. Unfortunately it is not friendly to casual visitors as you have to sign in to see anything and pay to see most things.
