First Time Fly Cutting

(1/1)

ozzie46:

I ground up a fly cutter tool bit like Bogs showed and cut some brass. I was surprised when it got to the back side of the cut and the brass  chips or flakes just seemed to float down! :bugeye:  I've never seen anything like it.

Comments, suggestions. Should I try to adjust the tram or call it well and good. It is a harbor frieght drill/mill.   (aka "Big Red". )

Ron,

That is a normal occurance with that shape of flycutter when your tram is a tiny bit out. It was because the shavings were so fine, just like dusty cobwebs. Most probably only a couple of tenths thick.

Were you getting a very fine mirror like surface?

If the finish was good, I wouldn't worry about it.

The parts are for your paddleducks engine John. Thanks

kvom, Thanks for the reply. been following you build of this engine. Very good work. Your milling sequence of the cross heads helped a lot.
