Whats happened to Biro's

Whilst doing some marking out I was using a Bic ballpoint that just wouldn't play ball (sic) After a while I noticed it didn't have the hole in the body to equalise pressure.   Looked through my current pens and they are the same.   Drilled a 1mm hole in the body of this one blew to pressurise the pen and all was good.   How come they stopped putting the holes in, have they become too expensive, a safety issue having a hole without warning ???

Or just some plonker that had no idea why they put a hole in it in the first place.....
