What I want to know is.... what IS it they were making? And what's it for? It's a support for a clock ballence wheel to let the wheel outside of the plates , to allow it to be seen . |

Whilst I agree that the job could have been done just as easily on a milling machine, it does show how you can add another axis to your lathe. And maybe the whole point was to illustrate a different technique. The clock making fraternity do like their 'glued on' work holding. Does anyone know if the method used was once in common use amongst clock makers ? Dave. |

Yes, but they used to use wax chucks in place of superglue. My mentor taught me how to use a wax chuck and I keep a couple of sticks of sealing wax handy in the event. |
