How to clamp mill vice to table?

<< < (3/3)

John Hill:
I have been lying awake thinking about this..thank you for all the comments and advice.

Hmmm, I didnt know about waxing the underside of the vice.

My vice is on a swivel base which I usually leave set to zero and make the final alignment by moving the base on the table but I recognise having the base always square to the table would be a great advantage.

I do have washers under the two pairs of nuts and although not thin they could maybe be thicker.

There are a couple of ideas came to mind during the night which I should experiment with and present here..

John Hill:
I did a job today which kept me out of the shop until this evening then I read your comments again...

So as per suggested I machined the surfaces where the washers and nuts rest and went to get a rag and a pottle of wax.  I felt a bit stupid there with my vice on the bench and the waxy rag in my hand but I decided to go ahead and did the wax bit too.

The vice was easily aligned and barely moved while I tightened the nuts down.

Now then, if the waxing was a send up you can all have a hearty laugh at me!
