Broken tool tip clamping screw
« on: February 07, 2016, 04:04:06 PM »
Hi All,
Pictured is a tool holder that has a spacer under the replacable tip
it has  PSSNR 2020-12 engraved on the shank and Roto Tool Castolin +Eutectic on a sticker
There is a clamping screw with internal and external threads that holds the spacer and a smaller torx that holds in the tip
When I went to change the tip the spacer retainer unscrewed and I cannot seperate the inner torx screw
Excess force means I now have broken off half the small torx head
A web search has not revealed much, lock pins for clamp style tools look similar but seem to be one piece :bang:
searching for the number on the tool holder only brings up clamp type holders
Have any of you guys seen this type of tool holder or can you point me in the direction of spares?

John

Is it the same as this http://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/item.aspx?cat=3601120&fnum=747&mapp=IS&app=0&GFSTYP=M .

I don't think it is the same. I have a couple of those and there is no clamping screw, the insert is held against the seat by a  boomerang-shaped lever.

....and Roto Tool Castolin +Eutectic on a sticker ......

hi John - regret can't help with the tool but I suspect the sticker might be a red-herring. My first AC TIG welder was a Castolin + Eutectic "Castotig", and, although I've never owned one, I think the "Roto Tool" may refer to their range of metal-spraying kit.

Dave is on to something here. I suspect that the tool was supplied as part of the metal spraying kit. The first action is to turn down leaving a controlled degree of roughness for the first layer of deposit to key to. Then it is sprayed up to oversize and turned back to finish.

Anyone want to buy a powder spraying kit - got one somewhere

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies,
Dave is more than likely correct with the tools origin,
But I am not a lot nearer a solution :bang:
I found these pins on ebay and am wondering if it may be possible to machine away the top part
and drill and tap for the torx screw ?

Did the screw head ever actually hold the insert down? The reason I ask is that some holders have a screw with an eccentric shoulder that locates in the hole in the insert. As you turn the screw the eccentric pulls the insert back into the pocket thus locating it fore & aft, with the cutting forces holding in on it's seat.

I have a couple of that style with broken screws, and I turned an eccentric peg on the end of a suitable allen socket cap screw inserted from below the holder as the threaded hole goes all the way though the tool.

As others have said I reckon the Rototool Castolin Eutectic is a red herring here.

A PSSNR20/20 K12 is a industry standard roughing tool.

Check these links out to see if you can find the part you're looking for.
http://www.shop-apt.co.uk/spare-parts.html

Here is the actual tool,if you scroll down to bottom of this linked page you will see photos of the associated spare parts.

....OZ.

Hi Andrew,
Yes I had the torx screw out quite a few times,
I made the mistake of not looking carefully enough to se the torx socket in the underside and used the top screw to try and lock in the spacer retaining part :palm:
then I couldnt separate the two parts

The parts in the links Oz posted are similar but not the same, they all use a clamp or eccentric to secure the tip
My toolholder does not have the second screw shown
