Vertex mini vice?
« on: May 20, 2014, 05:44:32 AM »
I'd like to get a Vertex Mini Toolmakers Vice as shown at the top of this page.

http://coeckemachines.com/vertex/pdf/b-series/b4.pdf

Also here:

http://www.vertex-tw.com.tw/products/products_list.php?cid=134#pro

Note the cut outs on the top of the jaws. I think this may be a useful feature but all the Vertex ones I've seen being sold by the usual suspects, Chronos, RDG etc show a vice without the cut outs! I think Arceurotrade sell one with cut outs but would prefer a Vertex if I can get one.

Anyone seen the one in the picture for sale anywhere?

I have three of these vices, the smallest one (1"shown in the second link) has the cut out and two large ones (2")don't. I bought mine from CTC tooling.

The only think that I don't like about these vises is the nut is not very well thought out, it is difficult to use in standard form, but it can be modified? I like having two of the 2" ones very useful for long or odd shaped things!

Yes, I'm not a great lover of the screwless vice having bought the 2 inch version but I think the small one with the cut outs may be useful.

Just for information...the one which ARC sells is made in the same factory as the VERTEX one.

Ketan at ARC.

Just to add to this which vice thread,I purchased a 70mm type 2 toolmakers vice from arc a couple of days back and I have to say the quality and precision of this vice is superb. http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Workholding/Machine-Vices

Hello, I purchased a pair from ACR EURO and for the money they have been good value. I wanted them as a matched pair so I could have two clamped to the milling machine at the same time. When I clamped them to a precision parallel 25mm by 30mm cross section I noticed one was low by .03mm. So took them to the club and skimmed the bases to the same size on the surface grinder. They are now spot on. No complaint with Arc Euro. I have seen the same quality at double or triple the price. Mine are the ones with just hole and no side clamping grooves. Made two alloy buttons so I could clamp via the centre hole/slot and not mark the ground slides. I bit of time on the milling machine and two clamps were made that hold down on the vice bed sides.
Good luck Phody
PS get the ones with the spring fitted to the jaw clamping bolt, if they suit your purpose.
PPS A 'T' handled 'hex' wrench makes tightening a pleasant operation.

I'm a great fan of the T handle hex wrench and find the extra long ones very useful, also the ball type when access is difficult.
My favourite brand is Bondhus.

Let's see you clamping buttons when you get a minute Phody.
