The formulae I read was 70uf per Kw (52uf per hp) and rated at least 1.2 x line voltage. It also needs to be continous duty type.
My machine had a 3/4hp motor so I used a 300v 40uf capacitor after swapping the leads over from star to delta. The capacitor was quite large, maybe 150-170mm long and 32-35mm dia in a metal can.
You only get up to 80% of the motors rated output but I never noticed any lack of power. Also not suitable for motors that need to start under load apparently.
