Kjelle:
The sound of a RR Merlin... Gul Kalle (Yellow Charlie), on an open day in Tullinge (since closed) doing a low pass... For a lot of previous generations in Europe, this sound was the sound of FREEDOM, whether from a Spitfire or a Mustang, or from multiple engines on a Lancaster or Mosquito...
Thanks for bringing back happy memories!
Kjelle
Stilldrillin:
John, Kjelle.
Thanks for your comments.
I don't remember WW2, of course, though I was born, in the middle of it.
Why does such a sound/ sight, touch me. Sufficient to almost move me to tears?
Here's another, you might like to see.......
The sound is much improved, through headphones. Particularly, if you are a bit deaf, like me.

16 Spitfires? Is that all? In 1949, we had two Spitfire squadrons, 601 County of London and 604 County of Middlesex based at RAF Hendon, now the RAF Museum. In addition we had the 3 VIP Spitfires belonging to the Bigwigs of Air Ministry. It got a bit noisy on a weekend from these jockeys swanning about. It was 'normal' to bounce the wheels off the cookhouse roof on approach.
All quite jolly- until one went a bit deaf. Eventually, there were painted ones. Watch the Dirty Dozen again and the guardroom bit- that was Hendon.
Pardon, eh?
