HBS KES 1600 Stud Welder ???????????
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:00:29 AM »
I've just 'won' a stud welder on ebay - it's a KES 1600 by HBS - anyone know anything about them?

I 'think' it welds up to 6 mm studs, and I 'think' that it's a capacitive discharge machine, but information is very sketchy and  it's not arrived yet

This is a case of solving 'yesterdays problem' - some years ago I was making an assembly that would have been so much easier using a stud welder, so I've hankered after one ever since. This popped up as a 'buy it now' at a very acceptable price so I snatched it quickly.

Chap had got it from a local fabrication shop that was closing down, and had hoped to use it to pull dents out of body work, but those type of stud guns are far lighter duty I think.

If it doesn't work I've at least bought myself an expensive pair of Mole Grips

Looks a Nice bit of kit Andrew.
Id say looking at it should be the capacitive type, we used a similar machine when I worked at Toyota. Just make sure your hands/ gloves are dry when putting the studs in the collet, had a few tickles off them :D
Very handy machine to have. Is it 3ph?
Lee.
wishing my workshop was larger :(

Don't know if this will help or not, I think it's the manual for several KES stud welders including the 1600TH.  Is that the flavor that you have by any chance?

Hi Don,

Did you include an attachment, if so it's not showing up? The beast only bears the number 1600, and is single phase

Thanks,
Andrew

I have the same stud welder as this and I would also like to find a copy of the manual.

mine came out of an industrial unit that the occupiers had neglected to pay the bills on.

mine has a few notes written on the top in pen i.e m6: xxx amps, m8": xxx amps

ive only ever used it for M6 studs and it took a bit of fiddling with the settings and knowing how hard to push on the gun before I got it right.

and ive never worked out why mine has two earth leads on it?

Hi Fleety,

I never did find any documents for the stud welder, but I seem to remember that I wrote another thread about it in the 'new from old' section where I put a few details. It's nice kit and make a nice weld
