Where to get worm and gear 1:40 or 1:60 for indexinng?
PekkaNF:
I have a small rotab. I alsko have some indexing disk 10-49 holes. They do not really fit together.
I would very much leave my rotab as it is and would like to build something different for indexing.
Next project is screaming of micrometer type dial, and I'm very tempted to try to line the dial on the lathe and index the mandrell. Probably I will construct a direct indexing feature when I will update the lathe AC motor and VFD. Meanwhile I could cobble up something at the tail end of the lathe, but would very much to use proven brass gear / steel worm construction.
So, where I could get a ready made steel worm and brass gear for indexing apparatus?
I would like to have 1:40 or 1:60 ratio to put the indexing plates into a good use.
I probably could go nonstandard ratio and use stepper motor, driver, and indexer but prefer mechanical solution here.
Any pointers? I tried to google, but found some industrial gear units and then some toys.

Hi Pekka
You can cut a worm wheel on your lathe using a spiral flute tap in the chuck an suitable gear blank mounted on the tool post.
I have read this on a forum somewhere but for the life of me the location eludes me now.
You have to calculate from the thread pitch the diameter, then add the thread depth

Thanks
I have been reading ocassionally about this type of free hobbing and even tried it once. It's pretty labor intensive for end result.

Some did not have this good results.
If these parts would be available at reasonable quality/price I rather would buy them. If I had proper material and worm (trapezoidal bar?) ready I probably would give it a try.
Found this one, but pretty expensive:

Straight spure gears work with a largeish worm at an angle ,the angle is related to the diamiter of the worm my one can use myford change gears up to 45 teeth , or http://www.beltingonline.com/gears-racks-366/worm-wheels-374/bronze-0-5-2-0-mod-474/ .

Thank you, that shop good, but shipping of a gear pair would cost £32.50, which is ridiculous. Most UK mail order companies that weight would be about 6-8 GBP.
