Title: Let everyone know what you are up to.
Post by: bogstandard on February 15, 2009, 04:13:31 PM
Over the years, I have always let friends and aquaintancies know what I get up to in my shop.

Whilst doing so, I always tell them that I am on the lookout for decent bits of materials, as long as it isn't just tiny bits of junk, almost anything goes.

An entertainer friend of mine called around this afternoon with a big bag of aluminium offcuts. He had recently been cleaning out his deceased brother's garage, and came across this lot, and thought that it would do for me.
The big ones are 3" diameter.

Last thursday evening, an old workmate came round, and said 'I have found a few of these, so I brought one around to see if it is any good, if it is, how many do you want?'
After a quick checkover, it turned out to be machined cast iron.
'Just bring as many as you want' I said, 'I will find a use for them sometime', behind his back, I was rubbing my hands with glee.

So this does prove, that letting people know that you will take their rubbish off their hands (their junk, my raw materials) does work.
There must be well over 100 squids worth of raw material in these two pics, ALL FOR FREE.

I wonder what will turn up next week?

Wow that's a great little treashure trove you've dug up there John

All you need now is an engine to build round that cast iron fly wheel.

Keep putting out the word

Cheers

Gents,

This honestly proves that my method of working works. Treating friends well and for free, brings great rewards.

It isn't the material that gives me great satisfaction (well just a little bit), it is the thought that they thought of me instead of someone else, without having to be asked or told more than once.

This sort of thing happens on a very regular basis.

You've got a wicked sense of humour John.

I've now got to go and change my trousers, spilled coffee all over them when I read your reply.

I have long been recogised as a bone fide junk collector and we live not too far from the local landfill.  In the good old days, before the Council made the landfill all 'safe',  friends would take a load to the landfill then if they say anything they thought I might like they would pick it up and drop it off as they drove near our house.  Of course a lot of it I had to take back the next week!  But some was real gold!

Around about 1980 I rescued an old radio transmitter destined for the scrap, it stood about the size of a modest wardrobe and had become obsolete.  People who knew me told me about it and made the arrangements.  I collected it from its place of installation and hauled it home to stand in the corner of the garage now occupied by my lathe.  When the lathe arrived I searched the web for a new home for this thing and found one in America.  Now the transmitter is in two crates about to be loaded on a ship and my bank account is richer by enough to pay for more than half the new lathe! :ddb:

Our son is a care worker, at a local home.

The other week, he showed up with an old wheeled zimmer frame for me!   :bugeye:

"I know I`m old, son, but"........

"Well...... You said you wanted some sort of trolley wheel!"  ::)

That`s ma boy.........      Can`t argue with his logic......
