First bits on new mill
« on: November 03, 2011, 10:41:04 AM »
Just joined up and thought I would put in my first pics for some practise, nothing very difficult or complicated (that will come later I hope)

First one is pretty self explanatory and you will all know exactly what it is, but I wonder if you can tell what the second is?

I'm not a complete idiot, some bits are missing!

DOH! wheres the embarassed smiley gone? forgot to delete the name of the pic before I uploaded it. Ah well, I did say the first upload was for some practise :palm:
To try and redeem myself a little (probably not), I will rephrase the question.
What is the mold for?

No not bullets I'm afraid. Lead weights for salmon fishing. Screw together and stick in oven until suitably warm, pour in molten lead and then dip in cold water to cool down (obviously keeping water away from molten lead), made that mistake...................once!

Ah, I can see you'll be getting into die casting pretty soon.

Very nice. I think you'll do just great at more complicated projects.

Oh, by the way, we need a picture of those lead weights.  :poke:

Unfortunately the moulds were for someone else and don't know when I will be able to get hold of one of the weights, I will see what I can do though.

What do they use in place of lead now that it is banned for weights in angling (in UK) ? or is lead only restricted in certain circumstances...?

Lead shot is banned but large lead weights are ok i believe (or used to be the case). It used to be all about the birds swallowing them.

Yup you're both right, small lead weights (shot) is banned as other wildlife ie birds can eat it, large weights like these are allowed due to the size as they would be pretty hard to get down. They are about 85mm long and 13mm dia.

I've often wondered about that. Metals denser than lead look like they cost too much due to their rarity (and in the case of mercury, unsuitability). Of those less dense, iron and copper look the likeliest candidates, at very roughly 2/3 the density. Anyone know what the UK substitute for lead shot is?

I am a fly fisherman and make my own flies, sometimes I need to put some weight on a fly through the use of a smalll bead on the hook. Iquite often use tungsten beads instead of wrapping lead wire round the shank of the hook, but I hate loosing them cos they're so damned expensive. I am sure I have heard other fisherman say they also use tungsten shot nowm

Tungsten would make sense - I know Tungsten alloys are used for balance weights in aircraft and in Formula 1.  Depleted Uranium isn't quite as popular as it used to be that kind of thing!
